It was Thursday night. Simon and Zoe were in Frank’s car, heading for the abandoned suburb. Simon said he wanted to check things out, learn more about where the creatures had come from. They weren’t in the bestiary, Simon had explained, seeming more puzzled than frightened. After what he had done to the others, they held no terror.

Simon, on the other hand, had been terrifying. When the Black Mantle had grown into that horrible leviathan, something primal within her had demanded she run.

She hadn’t.

She had trusted him to keep control, and he had. Trust had been rewarded. Couple that with what happened with Juan Carlos, and she was in serious danger of respecting her mage.

They pulled over a block away in the same parking lot. The neighborhood was silent, and seemed emptier than it had before. Of course it did. The cultists had vacated it. The power of the Lost Place would be bleeding away into the surroundings until it would be useless to the planet. This was exactly what the Order was supposed to do.

They waited until traffic lightened a bit, and then hopped the fence. Before the suburb’s emptiness was like a black hole, the aggressive absence of something, like the empty maw of a giant beast. Now it was merely a creepy place devoid of life. Their footsteps echoed hollowly in the clear night.

Simon pointed.

“There.”

She followed the gesture to a house at the edge of the neighborhood and shuddered at the memory of that place. It had been hard to look at, as though her mind could not perceive the connection between earth and Ahriman. That was far too vast, so it became a shimmering blind spot in her psyche, a memory aggressively blocked.

They walked toward the house.

And skidded to a stop when the door opened.
